The University of Wollongong was founded in 1951 as a branch of the University of Technology of New South Wales in the Wollongong region. In 1965, the University of Wollongong became part of the University of New South Wales when the University of Technology was reorganised and renamed the University of New South Wales. In 1975, the Wollongong Campus was separated from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) by the Parliament of New South Wales (NSW) and officially established the University of Wollongong in the Wollongong region.
